Oryx (Oryx gazella)

The Oryx is a large African antelope. They live in herds of about 10-40 animals. They often live in association with zebras, gazelles or other antelopes. Oryx are mainly desert-dwelling and do not depend on drinking to supply their physiological water needs.

Physical Characteristics
Oryx are well known for their horns; female's horns are curved while male's horns are thicker and parallel. Male Oryx have been known to gore attacking lions with their horns. There are two types of Oryx: a northern and southern variety. The northern Oryx have black-fringed ears while the southern ones have longer horns and more rounded ears. Oryx have an average shoulder height of 120 cm and can weigh up to 200 kilograms.
